My great aunt was telling my grandmother about my other great aunts husband. He is in a hospital down in mobile. They couldn't leave when the hurricane came in because of that. He has several problems..alchiemers is one of them. My aunt was saying that at night the nurses there won't clean up patients. So if something happens and they wet themselves or crap themselves they either lay in it or thier family takes care of them. My aunt and my grandmother seemed to think this was because all the nurses there are black. For some reason I don't think it has to do so much with race. That might be a part of it though. I don't know which hospital it is. It might be VA hospital. Anyone know anything about hospitals down there? Do they have a staff shortage? Or is it just bad attitude on part of the administration? From all I have read problems like that have more to do with the way the hospital is run and the attitudes of those in charge(the leadership) than with race or the training of the staff or even the pay scale. The carelessness jsut gets passed down to everyone that works there and those that might have been really good just get frustrated...the other folks are restentful of anyone that actaully does a good job because that implies criticism of how they do thier jobs...so eventually no ones does much of anything they don't have to do. It might be easier for certain races to absorb those attitudes but unless every single person that has anything to do with the hospital set up and administration is black..then I don't see how it could be attributed solely to race. Unless they are afriad to fire bad workers just because they are a certain race...i have heard that excuse mentioned in regards to problems in other places as well. I don't see how that would work though..they might get sued on a race issue in that case..but if they keep folks they know are not good...they could get sued and lose even more for negligence...I think there must be a whole lot of issues I am not even thinking of. I really don't know much about how hospitals work at the best of times. I have met quite a few nurses. White, blacke, philipino, spanish, male and female...none of those things seem to matter in determining which ones are are really great nurses and which are not. It matters whether they like it..whether they care...if they are nice. The worst one I ever met was was a white woman. Could be there are jsut more white ones so more likely to be bad white ones. I think I need more coffee for this. Any thoughts?
